Confirm Your Pregnancy With An Ultrasound

Birth Choice provides complimentary, limited OB ultrasounds to ascertain gestational age, detect a fetal heartbeat, and confirm the pregnancy's location in the uterus. Our ultrasounds are conducted by either one of our nurse sonographers or an RDMS and are reviewed by a radiology team or an OB/GYN.

Can I schedule an ultrasound without a pregnancy test appointment?

No. A positive pregnancy test at our center is required to establish you as a client. Depending on availability, you may be seen for a pregnancy test and ultrasound as a combined appointment.

I'm considering abortion. Should I have an ultrasound?

If you are considering abortion as an option, your first step is to confirm pregnancy viability through an ultrasound.

An ultrasound will determine:

The gestational age of the pregnancy. This knowledge is important in determining which method of abortion you would be eligible for. Each type of abortion procedure and cost depends on your personal health history and how far your pregnancy has progressed.

Whether or not your pregnancy is viable. The best way to be 100% sure you have a viable pregnancy (a pregnancy that is progressing) is to have an ultrasound. Studies have shown that up to one in four pregnancies do not progress. Some women don’t know they’ve had a miscarriage until it is seen during an ultrasound. If you have miscarried, you may need to receive follow-up care from a doctor.

An ultrasound will confirm that the pregnancy is in the uterus. When the pregnancy is outside of the uterus, this is considered an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies can be life-threatening and require further medical attention.

What does a limited ultrasound do or not do?

Limited Ultrasounds Often DO:

Check for the fetal heartbeat
Estimate gestational age and approximate due date
Identify the number of fetuses
Verify the pregnancy is located in the uterus
Advise immediate medical attention at an emergency room if indicated

Limited Ultrasounds at Birth Choice do NOT:

Determine the sex of the baby
Diagnose fetal abnormalities
Substitute for prenatal care

Why should I have an ultrasound at Birth Choice?

We provide free ultrasounds to assess the viability and fetal development stage, ensuring the pregnancy is in the uterus. As a community-funded nonprofit (501(c)3), Birth Choice doesn't gain financially from your ultrasound or pregnancy choice. Another advantage is that, since there's no charge, none of our procedures will be reported to your insurance or billed to your account.

Your ultrasound details are entirely confidential. We're here to support you in a non-judgmental and secure space as you explore your options.
