The Power of Vulnerability

The Power of Vulnerability

When you hear the word vulnerability do you think weakness and discomfort? You are not alone there. Many people feel negative about being vulnerable and many have good reasons to feel this way.

When we talk about vulnerability we are not saying you should make yourself weak and put yourself in dangerous situations. Instead, we want you to think about it in a positive way! We believe that sharing our life, being open, and thus vulnerable, is a life giving mindset.

Last month on our blog, we talked about community, and being vulnerable has a lot to do with building a strong community. An attitude of openness creates a bond with others and also an opportunity that encourages others to share as well. Today, we live in a world that is all about our privacy and we are beginning to believe the lie that what we do and go through is no one else’s business. The sad thing about this view is when people are going through a tough situation they feel alone, either because they feel they can’t share or because they think no one else would understand.

Now – this is why vulnerability matters! We need to be the ones to step out of our comfort zone and share hard experiences and through our example, encourage others to do the same! This will ultimately bring comfort, support, and encouragement. Now to be clear, you don’t have to be vulnerable with everyone. Using your best judgement, you must determine who the right people are to share certain information with. This is very critical in the process of becoming more vulnerable! This judgement will hopefully protect you from being hurt. So yes, there is a risk to vulnerability, but it’s a healthy risk. Although initially it may be a little uncomfortable and you may believe the lie that vulnerability makes you weak, after adjusting to this new mindset I’m sure you will see the benefit of vulnerability like we have.
