The loss of a loved one is always painful. The loss of a pregnancy is unique to other losses because you’ve never met this baby you are growing, and yet, you love this baby so much. After the loss of a pregnancy, instead of reflecting on all the memories you would have had with a person, you are thinking about all the “what could have beens” and the dreams you had for your future family. We want you to know that it’s okay to feel whatever feelings you are feeling. It’s okay to take time to process. It’s okay to grieve. It’s okay to need space from friends. It’s okay to talk about your baby. It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to not be okay.
It’s not your fault!
Common feelings after pregnancy loss include: confusion, jealousy, emptiness, sadness, loneliness, numbness, guilt, feelings of failure, questioning of God.
You may feel like a part of your identity has been taken from you, however, you are still a mother and this baby will be with you forever. Oftentimes in our pain we hide from those who love us most. Instead of turning from, turn toward those who love you. Because you hurt, they do too and they want to help. They are also grieving and it helps to be there for each other.
Although it is not always talked about, 1 in 4 women have had a miscarriage and because it’s so common it can be disregarded. You can always try again!” But that is not how your heart feels.
That is why it’s so important that there are programs to assist women (and the dads and their families) through these difficult times. Find others who understand this pain; also know there are groups and individuals out there that can walk with you during this very personal and difficult time.
