We’re all guilty of taking something without doing any research or ignoring data that is available. Maybe you’ve eaten certain food when you know there’s research on why you shouldn’t eat it. Maybe you’ve tried to follow some trendy, new diet, or taken a supplement that claims to cure whatever problem you have without checking it out first Regardless, , we’ve all been there and know better. With that said, many women take birth control without doing any research on the way it could change their body. We can be lazy and will believe what we’re told without question because we simply want to believe that the claims will provide the wanted result. Today let’s question what we’re told about birth control and look at some facts behind it.
Planned Parenthood claims “The birth control pill is a safe, simple, and convenient way to prevent pregnancy. It also has other benefits like reducing acne, making your periods lighter and more regular, and easing menstrual cramps” (Planned Parenthood, 2021). Did you know that birth control is classified as a carcinogen, meaning that it has known cancer causing agents in it? I don’t know about you but that doesn’t sound very safe to me. Carcinogenic drugs are approved by the FDA when the risk-benefit ratio of the drug is considered. For example if the drug was carcinogenic but someone would die without the drug the benefits would outweigh the potential risk. The other reason why a carcinogenic drug would be approved by the FDA is if there are no better alternatives. When we look at birth control through these lenses we have to ask ourselves how did birth control ever make the cut? People are not going to die without birth control and there are safer alternatives available. Oddly enough the normal rules for the risk-benefit ratio of carcinogenic drugs seems to just be ignored when it comes to the manufacturing of birth control. It’s not your fault if you’ve been told these manufactured lies. However, we’re here to inform you that you have other options because birth control has many unpleasant side effects which include:
- loss of libido
- rashes
- discoloration of the skin (melasma/chloasma)
- changes in weight or appetite
- nausea, vomiting
- migraines
- mood changes, including depression
- aggravation of varicose veins
- gastrointestinal symptoms (pain, cramps, bloating)
- spotting
- vaginitis (yeast infection)
- vitamin deficiencies
- water retention
- vision impairment
- liver malfunction (jaundice)
