Adoption; Another Option!

Adoption; Another Option!

When you first find out that you are pregnant, you may be flooded with a million questions and emotions! What am I going to do? Am I ready to become a parent? What about my future? You may feel scared, unsure or overwhelmed but it’s okay…these are normal responses. With any pregnancy a woman has a few options but today we want to discuss adoption!

What is adoption exactly? Adoption is a legal procedure, which places a child with adoptive parents who raise the child as a member of their own family. If you are considering placing your child for adoption, you will be allowed to customize the plan that fits you best. When working with adoption professionals, you are in control of creating a plan that make you most comfortable. You will receive support and information to help you each step of the way. There are three types of adoption to consider…

1.) Open Adoption

This choice allows you freedom to get to know the adoptive parents. You can meet them, exchange phone numbers and email addresses, and have ongoing direct contact with them. This communication can continue beyond the placement of the child. You may receive phone calls, pictures and letters, and you can even schedule visits with your baby and his or her new family. This will provide full disclosure to your child, allowing them to know their heritage and medical history.

2.) Semi-Open Adoption

This choice allows you to select the parents for your baby, but full, identifying information is not exchanged. While first names are often shared, each party in this type of adoption enjoys privacy. You will be able to receive letters and pictures from your baby’s family. They will be sent to you through the agency with which you choose to work.

3.) Confidential Adoption

This option is available to birthparents who would like to remain completely anonymous. The adoption agency you choose will support you throughout your pregnancy and will select a family that is a good fit for your wishes. Your identity will be protected before, during and after the adoption takes place.

Adoption is not an easy decision and is not a selfish option to consider. Let me repeat myself because that is important. Adoption is not a selfish option to consider! It actually can be a very loving and sacrificial decision that is in the best interest of the child. You are concerned about being a good mother and sensible enough to realize that raising a child can be difficult, even with the help of family and friends. It is not selfish of you to choose what is best for you and your baby. It can also be an opportunity to gift a couple who may not be able to have children with the ability to parent.

Adoption isn’t for everyone, but for some, it can be the most loving option. It is important to decide who can provide the best environment for your child’s physical and emotional upbringing. We believe that when you have information and support you will be in a much better position to make the decision that is right for you and your baby. The choices are entirely yours and you should not be judged or persuaded.
